Oyo State Procures Two Surveillance Aircraft to Combat Illegal Mining, Kidnapping

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde

The Oyo State Government has acquired two advanced surveillance aircraft to strengthen security operations against illegal miners, kidnappers, and other criminal activities.

Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade disclosed this in a statement following the State Executive Council meeting, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing safety across the state.

Oyelade explained that the newly procured DA 42 MNG model aircraft are equipped with high-tech Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, enabling security forces to monitor criminal activities from both high and low altitudes. The state opted for these aircraft over helicopters due to their lower maintenance costs, readily available spare parts, and compatibility with the Nigerian Air Force’s existing fleet, allowing for seamless collaboration.

Despite Oyo State being relatively peaceful compared to other regions, the government remains vigilant due to sporadic kidnappings and banditry. With a landmass of 28,454 square kilometers—the largest in southern Nigeria and bigger than 10 African countries—the state requires robust security measures. The ₦7.7 billion aircraft will support Amotekun and other security agencies in tracking and dismantling criminal hideouts.

Oyelade highlighted that Oyo’s Amotekun corps is the most equipped in the Southwest, with 2,500 personnel, 181 vehicles, and 450 motorcycles. Additionally, its operatives are the highest paid in the region, earning at least ₦116,000 monthly.

In other developments, the council approved ₦83 billion for the construction of bridges and interchanges along the 110km Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road, targeting completion of 72km by 2027. Road rehabilitation projects, including the Secretariat Road and Trans Amusement UI-Sango Road, were allocated ₦36.3 billion, while ₦6.8 billion was earmarked for the Mobil-Oluyole Industrial Estate Road network.

Furthermore, ₦595 million was approved for the Light-up Oyo Solar Project, with an additional ₦190 million monthly allocated for its maintenance. These initiatives underscore the state’s commitment to infrastructure development and public safety.
