The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has reinforced its commitment to the country’s energy transition by donating 35 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG).

The handover ceremony, held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, highlighted the company’s support for the federal government’s push toward cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.

NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Ojulari, emphasized the company’s dedication to advancing Nigeria’s gas agenda. “This donation aligns with NNPC Ltd’s vision to promote CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternative,” he said. Ojulari noted that significant progress has already been made in gas supply, infrastructure development, and retail expansion to support the nationwide adoption of CNG.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the initiative as a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “These buses are more than just vehicles—they represent economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and social equity,” Ekpo stated. He added that the move would help reduce transportation costs, curb reliance on petrol, and harness Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves for national development.

NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, outlined the economic benefits of CNG adoption, including lower fuel costs, decreased dependence on premium motor spirit (PMS) and diesel (AGO), and a stronger domestic gas market. The company’s Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energy reaffirmed NNPC’s leadership in driving CNG commercialization across Nigeria as demand for alternative fuels rises.

Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to foster an inclusive and sustainable energy future. Meanwhile, Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Coordinator of the Presidential CNG Initiative, commended NNPC Ltd for its consistent partnership, calling the bus donation a “major boost” toward achieving Nigeria’s CNG objectives.

Launched to alleviate transportation costs, enhance environmental sustainability, and optimize Nigeria’s natural gas resources, the Pi-CNG initiative will deploy the 35 buses as pilot models in public transport systems across major cities. The move signals a pivotal step in Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy and more efficient mobility solutions.
