Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have advised the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to reschedule its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to March 13, 2025.

The recommendation was made in a communique issued after a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum in Asaba, Delta State, attended by 12 PDP governors. The communique was signed by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum.

The governors used the meeting to review the performance of PDP-led states and the overall state of the nation, particularly the socio-economic, security, and infrastructure challenges faced in 2024. They commended PDP governors for implementing policies and programs aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by citizens and laying the groundwork for sustainable development in their respective states.

The communique also addressed the ongoing crisis within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) regarding the position of the National Secretary. The governors expressed support for the Court of Appeal judgment on the matter and urged the NWC to take steps to implement the court’s decision effectively.

On the NEC meeting, the governors emphasized the need for proper adherence to the party’s constitution, which mandates that NEC meetings be held once every three months. The last NEC meeting was held in April 2024, and the NWC, led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, had postponed the meeting twice in the last three months. The Board of Trustees (BoT) had rejected these postponements, and the meeting was eventually rescheduled for February 2025. However, the governors have now advised that the NEC meeting be held on March 13, 2025, to allow for adequate preparation and compliance with legal requirements.

The communique stated: “The Forum, having examined all the notices required by law to validly convoke NEC, advised the NWC to reschedule NEC to the thirteenth (13th) of March 2025.”

The NEC is the PDP’s highest decision-making body, comprising state governors, serving and former presidents, former vice-presidents, the chairman and secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT), principal officers of the National Assembly, all state chairmen, members of the NWC, former governors, and founding members, among others.

The PDP has been grappling with internal disputes, including the leadership crisis over the position of the National Secretary, which has seen Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye both laying claim to the role. The governors’ call for the rescheduling of the NEC meeting is seen as an effort to stabilize the party and ensure that critical decisions are made in a transparent and inclusive manner.

As the PDP works to resolve its internal challenges, the rescheduled NEC meeting in March 2025 is expected to provide a platform for addressing key issues and strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
