The Nigeria Police Force is gearing up to implement the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) starting July 29, 2024, as announced by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
This initiative aims to modernize and digitalize the motor vehicle registration system in Nigeria, significantly enhancing the country’s safety and security framework.
The e-CMR will serve as a sophisticated, real-time online database containing comprehensive motor vehicle data. It is designed to support police investigations and operational activities, particularly in combating vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
Key features of the e-CMR include streamlined documentation and verification processes for vehicle ownership and related transactions. Under the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), services such as change of ownership, license number, engine, and chassis/body will be seamlessly facilitated through this digital system.
This will ensure the validation of vehicle authenticity and ownership, improve the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles efficiently, and prevent the unwitting purchase of stolen vehicles by innocent buyers.
The implementation of the e-CMR represents a significant step towards enhancing law enforcement capabilities in Nigeria’s transportation sector, aiming to foster greater transparency, efficiency, and security in vehicle registration and management.
