The British High Commission in Nigeria has expressed interest in seeing that the forthcoming elections in Rivers State as well as the rest of the country are free, fair and credible.

The remarks were made by a delegation led by Jonathan Bacon, Political Adviser of the commission’s Abuja office, after a closed-door meeting with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike on Monday evening. Bacon reiterated the UK government’s commitment to supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold acceptable elections next year.

“We discussed how we could further strengthen the cooperation between the UK and Nigeria, and the UK and Rivers State,” he said. “We also discussed the electoral period, looking ahead to 2023, and I reiterated the British Government’s position that we are supporting the process.

“We are working very closely with INEC and we are hoping for a free, fair, and credible election in 2023. So, we discussed that and it was a very productive exchange.”
