Noting that the government should produce a policy on solid waste, Çatalköy Mayor Mehmet Hulusioğlu said, “Fires in both Güngör and municipal garbage areas cause serious problems.”
According to the information given by the Police Press Officer, the fire that started on Friday was extinguished by the fire brigades, but since the smoke continued, the area was intervened today with the teams of the police, fire brigade, Civil Defense and Forestry Department, Çatalköy Municipality and 3 construction machines belonging to a private company.
According to Turkish Agency Cyprus (TAK), Çatalköy Mayor Mehmet Hulusioğlu, said that the garbage in the region could not be evacuated due to the fire in the Güngör garbage dump, and they collected the garbage in the area used as a transfer station.
Stating that there are both domestic and green wastes (such as twigs, grass) in this area, Hulusioğlu said that the fire that started in the place where the green wastes were found spread to the place where the domestic wastes were located, and that the cooling of the extinguished fire and the improvement of the landfill were continuing.
Stating that the government should produce a policy on solid waste, Hulusioğlu noted that the fires in both Güngör and municipal landfills pose a serious problem.
The garbage collection area belonging to Çatalköy and Esenetepe Municipalities is located in the Tekenecik Power Plant area.
