Governor Nyesom Wike has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot do without him if the party seeks to get massive support in Rivers State.
Wike who stated this on Friday at a media chat in Port Harcour, insisted that the PDP cannot boast of pulling its weight in Rivers State, without him playing his role as a governor loved by his people.
โYou can do without me I agree, but to say you will do without me in this state (Rivers), it will not be possible,โ Wike declared.
The governor further asserted that it is sad the individuals who are pulling the string of discord in the PDP are those who rarely bring anything to the table.
Wikeโs comments are not unconnected with the push to remove the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu. A cause which the Rivers State governor says became imperative, seeing that no southerner occupies any of the top three positions in the PDP.
In the governorโs opinion, the crisis rocking the PDP at the moment, only suggests to Nigerians that the party cannot be trusted ahead of the 2023 elections.
Wike said the pride which threatens the peace of the party at the moment, might be its doom when Nigerians head back to the polls.
โWe have not won election we are too arrogant, we have not won election and we are telling Nigerians look you cannot trust us, we say one thing and we do a different thing,โ Wike asserted.
Speaking further on the issue threatening the peace within PDP, Wike said it is sad that no southerner occupies any of the three top positions within the party.
He added that the seed of discord was planted when the PDP shunned the zoning formula which would have seen a Southern candidate emerge as presidential flagbearer.
As regards the way forward, Governor Wike stated that sacrifices and compromises must be made in order for PDP to win the election.
He reiterated that though he might not be relevant as some have suggested in certain quarters, the PDP will not be able to pull its weight within the south without the support of a governor like himself.
