Public Workers Union President Ahmet Serdaroğlu pointed out that the problem of the janitors has been going on for about three months and said that the Ministry of National Education and the government started this problem.

Serdaroğlu said, “The Ministry of National Education and the government are responsible for the grievances that will occur, not our union.”

The Public Workers Union (Kamu-İş) went on strike today in Değirmenlik High School, 20 July Science High School and Gönyeli Primary School on the grounds that the mobbing and threats against its members working as janitors at schools continue.

In his press statement in front of the 20 July Science High School, Kamu-İş President Ahmet Serdaroğlu stated that “the mobbing and threats against the members working as janitors in schools continue” and accused the Ministry of Education and the government of being insensitive to the issue.

Pointing out that the problem of the janitors has been going on for about three months.

Serdaroğlu said that the “exploitation of labor” that he claimed was initiated by the Ministry of National Education and the government would not be a spectator.

Serdaroğlu claimed that the janitors had not received a salary for three months, and that the Provident Fund and Social Insurance investments had not been made for six months.

Stating that the threats made by the relevant company officials to the employees who used to work as subcontracted workers and are now members of Kamu-İş in schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education.

Serdaroğlu accused the ministry and the government of not complying with the labor laws and regulations.

Expressing that they want the cleaning and hygiene works to be carried out safely with the opening of the schools.

Serdaroğlu argued that the government has come to the point of not paying for the service it has purchased.

Stating that the ministry and the government do not protect the rights of their own employees who are organized.

Serdaroğlu noted that it is the duty of the Ministry of National Education and its Undersecretary and his government to solve the problems of their employees.

Arguing that the Ministry of National Education made the said tender illegally, Serdaroğlu stated that although a complaint was filed with the competition board for the subcontractor, the contract was signed before the five-day waiting period expired.

Serdaroğlu also stated that before the process was completed, the company went to schools and made the janitors uneasy and said that if they did not resign from the employees and the union, they would not get a salary.

Claiming that they are not chaos enthusiasts, but that it is the Ministry, ministry officials and the government that created the chaos and magnified the problem.

Serdaroğlu pointed out that their actions will continue until the Ministry of National Education solves the problem through dialogue.

Serdaroğlu stated that if the Ministry and the government continue to be a spectator to those who mob employees, their actions will expand and reflect on all schools across the island, adding, “Our union is not responsible for the grievances that will occur in this regard, all responsibility belongs to the Ministry of National Education and the government.”
