Ünal Üstel, who was appointed as the Prime Minister, stated that they will pass the Law on Municipalities Reform on Wednesday.
Ünal Üstel came together with the public by visiting Karaoğlanoğlu, Alsancak, Lapta and Karşıyaka in the Kyrenia region.
Pointing out that the issue of unifying municipalities started in 2008, Üstel argued that this process was initiated by the CTP.
“The first thing they did was to connect all the villages to the municipalities. Despite its opposition to the binding of some villages, the UBP did not listen and made a political decision. We’ve been here since 2008. They left power, the UBP came to power alone in the 2009 elections, and then the unification of municipalities came to the agenda. Every incoming government has worked, but they could not show the courage shown by the UBP. We showed that courage so that our people could get better service.”
Üstünel said, “A joint commission was established, including the opposition parties, and we worked on what the roadmap would be like when uniting the municipalities in this joint commission. As a result of the study, 17 criteria came out and 18 municipalities were equal according to these criteria. We said that we should go with this consensus when we go to the local elections. After the negotiations of the joint commission were over, the opposition party told us that we have a red line. We said that if you have a red line, we have it too. Even though we said we exist to the number of municipalities formed by those criteria, they tried to take a step back and broke the consensus,” he said.
