A cyber espionage operation was carried out against Turkey’s national project, the submarine management system MUREN. According to the news of Oda TV, the Near East University (NEU) was used for the spy attack and it was deployed on its servers for 1 year.

According to Cyber Security Specialist Ersin Çahmutoğlu, “A cyber espionage operation has been detected against MÜREN, Turkey’s national project, submarine management system.” Odatv’s sources confirmed the incident.

In his post on his social media account, Ersin Çahmutoğlu said that according to the report prepared by the Chinese NSFocus, a new APT group of unknown origin targeted the Naval Forces Command at the beginning of August.

Ersin Çahmutoğlu wrote in his sequential tweets:

“The process of the cyber operation is quite interesting.

MurenShark has chosen the Near East University in Cyprus as its primary target in order to carry out its operations. And they violated the university’s website and used it as a command control and data transfer server for exactly 1 year.

According to the report, the threat actor named MurenShark has highly advanced capabilities. The tools they use are varied and have specific managements. In order not to be disclosed during the operation processes, they tried to lose their traces. Therefore, their identities and locations were not determined.

According to the results of the analysis, MurenShark has only one target, and that is Turkey.
The goal is just cyber espionage. There’s definitely a government behind it!”
