Cross River communal clash leaves many dead, injured

Many people were feared dead in a renewed communal clash between indigenes of Alesi in Ikom Local Government and Ochon in Obubra Local Government of Cross River.

The cause of the clash was yet to be ascertained but sources hinted the farming season, which is at hand often comes unrest in the area.
The feuding groups blocked the federal highway along Obubra-Ikom axis with some travellers attacked and their vehicles vandalised.
It took combined security operations involving the Nigerian Army before the highway was cleared for commuters and travellers.
The fighters, mostly youths in the communities, had blocked the road on Monday night up to Tuesday, disrupting free movement on the busy road.
Cross River police spokesman Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident on Tuesday evening.
She said the Police Commissioner and Deputy Governor have waded in and met with the communities.
She said normalcy has been restored on the affected federal highway.
She confirmed some persons died during the clash with properties destroyed but provide specific figures.
