Mechanic jailed for cheating woman of N36,000

A Dutse Grade I Area Court, Abuja on Thursday, sentenced Ibrahim Yahaya, a mechanic, to four months imprisonment for defrauding a businesswomen of N36,000.

The Presiding Officer, Mr Suleiman Mohammed, sentenced Yahaya after he pleaded guilty to breach of trust and cheating.

He gave him an option to pay N20, 000 as fine.

Mohammed held that the convict failed to give the court a reasonable explanation why he committed the crime.

He also ordered the convict to pay back N36,000 to the complainant, Mrs Rahina Yahaya.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr Tunde Arowolo told the court that the convict was reported at the Bwari Police Station by a businesswoman on Feb. 27.

He said that the convict went to the complainant’s shop where she operated a Point Of Sale system and asked her to transfer N36,000 to a first bank account.

He said that the convict promised to pay the complainant once the transaction was successful but he refused to pay back after.

He added that during police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime which he also said  contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
