Man bags 18 months jail term for assaulting own mother

A Magistrate Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man,  Obinna Nwankwo to 18 months imprisonment for assaulting his mother, one Mrs Chinyere Nwankwo.

The accused also allegedly damaged four plastic chairs, windows and other valuables, valued at One Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira only (N160,000,00.), belonging to the mother.

During his arraignment on 14th January 2020, the accused, a native of Onuebonyi, in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state pleaded guilty to the two counts of assault and unlawful damage brought against him by the prosecution.

Following his admission, the Magistrate, Happiness Chima convicted and sentenced him to 18 months in prison without the option of fine.

She said the court exercised its discretion on the matter and decided to be a bit harsh on the accused for assaulting and insulting his mother, who carried him in the womb for nine months and breastfed him for over six months.

She said:”This is not just an affront to your mother alone, but all women worldwide.”

The police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Mbam, had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offence at Quarry Junction, Abakaliki, around 6 pm on January 11, 2020, when he hit his mother with an iron rod on the head.

He said the accused had pleaded guilty to the charge and urged the court to convict and sentence him in accordance with the provisions of the law.

He added that the offence contravened and was punishable under Sections 351 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
