Two charged with assault, cult membership in Lagos

Two men were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged assault and membership of an unlawful society.

Tejumola Yekini, 20, and Ishola Raimi, 40, who live in Ijora Badia, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and belonging to an unlawful society.

Prosecuting Inspecting Victor Eruada said the duo committed the offence on June 16 at 8.15 p.m. at Mosalashi Bus Stop, Ijora Badia.

Eruada said the defendants and others still at large conspired and macheted Alhaji Farouk Olayemi on his head.

“The duo assaulted the complainant by cutting him with a cutlass causing him bodily harm.

“They also conducted activities of an unlawful society known as Onke confraternity and Akosile confraternity,” Eruada said.

Chief Magistrate Dan-Oni granted the defendants N200,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

The sureties she said, must be gainfully employed and possess evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned until July 17.

Also yesterday, a trader, Al-hassan Yusuf, accused of collecting N4 million to procure chemicals for a man, appeared before Magistrate Dan-Oni.

Yusuf, who lives in Idiroko, Ogun, State, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.

Eruada said the defendant committed the offence with some other persons at large, on February 11 at 18 Oduduwa Crescent, GRA, Ikeja.

Eruada alleged that the defendant collected the money from Alhaji Jidda Adum , with a promise to procure the said chemicals for him.

He said the defendant neither bought the chemicals nor refunded the money.

Magistrate Dan-Oni granted him N1 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

She adjourned till July 17.
