The Senate on Tuesday asked its committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions to consider the request by President Muhammadu Buhari that the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, be confirmed for another term of five years.
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, at plenary asked the Rafiu Ibrahim-led committee to carry out the assignment and present its report within one week.
Buhari had last week sent an executive communication in which he sought the Senate’s confirmation for Emefiele’s second and final term.
The letter addressed to the President of the Senate and read on the floor, stated in part, “I hereby present for confirmation by the Senate, Mr Godwin Emefiele, for re-appointment as Governor of CBN for the final term of five years.
“It is my hope the distinguished Senate will consider and confirm the nominee with the usual expeditious manner.”
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Youths and Sports on Tuesday threatened to ask the National Lottery Commission to seal off the offices of a betting firm, Bet9ja, if the company failed to honour its invitation the second time.
The committee’s Chairman, Obinna Ogba, gave the warning during the verification of lotto companies operating in Nigeria.
The senator declared, “If they do not honour our invitation again, we will ask the National Lottery Commission to seal off their offices.”
He said the verification was organised following complaints against betting firms in the country.
He noted that while some did not have offices, some had not been making remittances to the government.
About 20 betting firms appeared before the committee on Tuesday.
