Benchers are key to instilling confidence in Nigeria’s democracy, says Saraki

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on Friday evening, said that the Body of Benchers in Nigeria had a great role to play in instilling confidence in the nation’s democracy.

Saraki stated this while delivering a goodwill message at the Body of Benchers Nigeria Award Night in Abuja.

The Senate President, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, added that the judiciary was also key to ensuring sustainable economic development of the country.

He stated that there must be a concerted drive towards consolidation of democracy, liberalisation of the economy, and ensuring the rule of law.

Saraki said, “In the next few decades, the population of Nigeria and the continent – including the youth demographic – is set to increase exponentially.

“The challenge ahead is to see how we can reduce poverty and create jobs for the youth whose numbers will triple in the coming years.”
