Bauchi State vigilantes allegedly torture butcher to death over goat theft

Members of a local vigilante group, popularly known as ‘Yan Kwamiti’, have allegedly tortured a 28-year-old butcher, Abdulrazak Hassan, to death in the Wuntin Dada area of Bauchi State.

It was gathered that the incident, which occurred on Friday, provoked the youth of the area, who threatened revenge but were prevented from doing so by the elders.

Speaking to newsmen, the father of the deceased, Sarkin Pawa Wada, said somebody was caught with a goat and was taken to the vigilantes’ office.

Wada stated, “The leader of the ‘Yan Kwamiti’, Mallam Abdulmumini Abbas, sent his boys to arrest my son, who was busy at his place of work, just because the suspected thief said he knew my son.

“When they took him to their office, they talked. I don’t know what they talked about because I was not there, but I learnt that the suspected thief was later released; they called the owner of the goat and handed over the animal to him.

“After that, they brought up the issue of a stolen ram, which my son knew nothing about. Abbas fined them N10,000 and the other people paid N7,000, and after they left, the vigilante group killed my son and made away with his money and his telephone handsets.”

The father of the deceased alleged that after killing his son, the some of the vigilante members brought the corpse to his house but they were seen.

He stated that when he returned home, he rushed to the village head of Wuntin Dada and informed him about the incident, adding that it was the village head who drew the attention of the GRA Divisional Police Officer to the incident.

Wada said policemen took his son to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor, adding that the corpse had been released to the family for burial.
