EFCC Arraigns Man for N1m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan Zonal Office, on January 18, 2019 arraigned one Ennis Olayinka Sunday before Justice M. L. Owolabi of the Oyo State High Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence, contrary to Section 1 (1) (2) and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences.


The charge preferred against him reads: “That you, Ennis Olayinka, on the 23rd day of August, 2016 in Ibadan within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, did obtained the sum of N1, 000,000 (One Million Naira Only) from Dr. Ezekiel Gbadebo Ojo with the pretence that the money will be invested in engine oil business, a pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence”.

The defendant however, pleaded “not guilty” to the charge preferred against him.

Prosecuting counsel, Adeola Elumaro, thereafter applied for a trial date and for the remand of the defendant in prison custody.


Counsel for the defendant, Adeleke Bakare, prayed the court to allow him move an oral application for bail.

Justice Owolabi, however, overruled the application of the defence and ordered that a formal bail application be presented to the court, because, “the court is a court of record”.

The defendant was thereafter ordered to be remanded in Agodi Prison, pending when his formal bail application will be heard on January 23, 2019.
