Niger State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old grandmother, Aisha Ibrahim, for allegedly killing her two-year-old granddaughter by throwing her inside a well.
The suspect allegedly tied the granddaughter with a rope and threw her inside the well in their house at Karaya Fulani Camp, in Rafi Local Government of Niger State.
Aisha said she carried out the act because she had been looking for a way to punish her daughter-in-law, adding she threw the deceased inside well because her mother (the suspect’s daughter-in-law) insulted and assaulted her.
It was gathered the grandmother saw an opportunity to carry out her act when her son, Bello Ibrahim and his wife left their child in her care and attended a naming ceremony in a neighbouring village.
The suspect said: “I instructed my husband to tell our son to divorce his wife, but he did not listen. My daughter-in-law is fond of insulting and assaulting me.
“I felt the only way I could pay her back was to tie her daughter with a rope and throw her inside well to die, so that she would feel the pains and agonies I have been experiencing.
“We lived in peace as one family before my son married her. I have 12 children. All of us live in one compound. She cannot come from nowhere to cause disunity in the family I have suffered for years to keep together as one. It’s unacceptable.”
Aisha, who was nabbed by the police from Kagara Division while trying to escape, said she regretted her action.
Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar said the suspect would be arraigned after investigation.
