President Buhari announced on Wednesday in a statement signed personally, said that June 12 would now replace May 29 as the Democracy Day and posthumously awarding Chief MKO Abiola, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.
We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections.
Abiola, who was the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, died on July 7, 1998.
