Septuagenarian remanded for alleged attempt to defile minor

A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court at the weekend remanded a 70-year-old pensioner, Haliru Usman, in prison for alleged attempt to rape a minor.

The accused, who lives in Mabera Magaji, Sokoto, is facing a charge of attempted rape.

Chief Magistrate Shuaibu Ahmad, who gave the order, said the court lacked jurisdiction to try the case. Police prosecutor Yahaya Ajuji alleged that the offence was committed on March 16 at Mabera Magaji.

He said Usman allegedly lured the eight-year-old girl to his room in an attempt to sleep with her. Ajuji alleged that the accused placed his manhood on her private part and ejaculated on her body.

The offence contravenes Section 95 of the Penal Code.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Ahmad adjourned the case till April 16 for mention and transfer to a court of competent jurisdiction.
