Yobe donates 20 Hilux vans to Nigerian Army

Yobe State government yesterday presented 20 Hilux vans to the Army as part of its support to fight Boko Haram.

Four refurbished Hilux vans were also presented to vigilance groups.

The vehicles were presented by Governor Ibrahim Gaidam to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, who handed them over to the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, at a ceremony in Damaturu.

Gaidam said he would support the Army in its quest to flush out Boko Haram elements, stressing: “The Army did not ask for the vehicles, but I saw it necessary to continue supporting them considering the remarkable achievements made so far.”

The governor urged Buratai to ensure that the vehicles are used for the intended purpose.

According to him, the vehicles cost N350 million.

Gaidam hailed the vigilance groups for their resilience, despite challenges.

He described them as worthy partners in the fight against Boko Haram.

The governor also announced a New Year bonus for members, and directed the secretary to the state government to compile their list and send to his table for approval.

The commander, Tela Sarkin Baka, thanked the government for the gesture and promised to support the Army.

Gen. Buratai hailed the governor for the gesture.

“On behalf of the Army, I thank you for these vehicles. This is one of the numerous assistances your administration has been giving us. You have been providing us with logistics, and provided lands to build Army Barracks on Potiskum Road, the Special School in Buni Yadi, among others.”

Also, in support of the fallen heroes, over N20 million was raised at the launch of the Armed Forces Emblem and Appeal week.

Governor Gaidam, who chaired the event at WAWA Hall in the Government House, donated N12 million on behalf of government, and N1 million personally.

“This event is part of our drive towards remembering and appreciating the valuable contributions of our soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars.

“The week-long celebration is, therefore, an opportunity to offer special prayers for the repose of the souls of our fallen heroes, pay tribute to them and raise funds towards assisting their offspring,” the governor said.

Chairman of the Yobe State Legion Capt. Ladi Gadime (rtd) hailed Gaidam for the gesture.

He pleaded that land, fertilisers and irrigation pump machines be provided for members of the legion to help them become self-reliant.

Deputy Governor Abubakar Aliyu donated N500,000; Speaker, House of Assembly, Adamu Dala Dogo gave N250,000; House of Assembly N1.2 million, while members of the State Executive Council gave N800,000.
