Two students remanded in Ekiti prison for armed robbery

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded two polytechnic students – Awire Adekunle and Oladende  Tobiloba‎ —  in prison over alleged armed robbery.

The accused – Adekunle, 24 and Tobiloba, 19 – both of Crown Polytechnic, Odo, via Ado-Ekiti, are facing charges of armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Bayo Ajiboye, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 13 in Igede-Ekiti.

He alleged that the duo wore Army camouflage to extort money from motorists on Awo-Igede road.

Ajiboye said some motorists plying the road alerted the police which led to the arrest of the accused persons.

The prosecutor said the police recovered a jack knife and other dangerous weapons from them.

The offences contravened Section 2 (1) (a) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special provisions) Act, 2004.

The case was adjourned to April 19 for mention.
