Correction officer and inmate die after falling into elevator while fighting

A corrections officer in Pennsylvania, lost his life in a freak accident while fighting with an inmate.

The corrections officer and the prisoner were fighting and they hit an
elevator door. The door suddenly gave way and opened, causing the two
people to fall 70 feet in the shaft.

Timothy Gilliam Jr., 27, who was in prison for failing to register as a
sex offender, attacked the 25-year-old old officer, who was identified
as Kristopher Moules.

The two exchanged words before getting into a fight at the Luzerne
County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre. They then crashed through
the elevator door.

Another corrections officer who came to assist Moules, narrowly escaped plunging into the elevator shaft.

Luzerne County Manager David Pedri called it a “freak accident,” and
said that an engineering firm will determine why the elevator door gave
way.
