The Nigeria Police Force in Yobe State has arrested Auwalu Haruna for allegedly abducting a 20-year-old woman and using charms to impregnate her.
DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command’s spokesman, disclosed in a press statement that this incident is part of 34 recorded cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and related crimes within the past six months. Notably, 85% of these cases are currently undergoing trial, with a few resulting in convictions.
According to the statement, the victim’s father reported the abduction to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters, alleging that Auwalu Haruna, a self-proclaimed Marabou, had abducted his daughter on June 6, 2024.
After an intensive search, the victim was found in Anguwan Arewa, Gaya LGA, Kano State, in the custody of the suspect. Medical examinations confirmed that she was two months pregnant. The victim revealed that she had been coerced into consuming a medicinal concoction that rendered her unconscious and vulnerable to Haruna’s actions.
CP Garba Ahmed, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, emphasized the need for parents, guardians, and community leaders to be vigilant regarding their wards’ relationships, as perpetrators of such crimes often have close ties to the victims. He called for collective efforts from stakeholders to combat GBV, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the well-being and development of girls and the broader society.
This arrest underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address GBV and related crimes, ensuring justice for victims and promoting community awareness and vigilance.
