Educational Scientist, President of Cyprus Educational Research Association (KEAB), Salih Sarpten, made a statement to Cyprus Post after the 2022 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) placement results were announced.
“QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN TURKEY DECLINED”
The number of students coming from the Republic of Turkey to the TRNC decreased from 54 thousand 875 to 43 thousand 101, in other words, there was a decrease of 21.45 percent. Educational scientist, Cyprus Educational Research Association (KEAB) President Salih Sarpten, who made a statement to the Cyprus Post on the subject, stated that the reason for the decrease in the number of students coming from Turkey was the “one university for every city” campaign in Turkey in the last 5 years. Stating that the number of universities has exceeded 200, he stated that this is due to the increase in the number of universities. He stated that the next reason for the decrease in the number of students coming to the TRNC was that the universities in our country accepted almost every student for the sake of receiving a ‘registration fee’ without any conditions. Sarpten explained that qualified students who want to pursue higher education, study in quality schools and get a good education do not prefer our country’s universities.
Sarpten said that students do not prefer our universities because they do not want to be among the student profile here because they make their decisions by looking at the profiles of the universities.
Sarpten said that the decrease in the number of students coming from Turkey is due to registration fees, expensive transportation and accommodation, and economic difficulties.

The number of foreign students placed in TRNC universities increased from 35 thousand 318 to 51 thousand 280. Stating that university administrations should stop seeing students as a source of income, Sarpten said that universities should strive to earn income and become a respected university by doing science, not just with student money.

Sarpten emphasized that in order for universities to develop, first of all, clear and understandable admission requirements in accordance with international norms and high school graduation conditions should be introduced for the admission of foreign students. The 2022 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) placement results were announced on Monday, according to the announced results, 11 thousand 141 students were placed in TRNC universities.
