Former U.S. President Joe Biden is currently undergoing radiation and hormone therapy as part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, a spokesperson confirmed on Saturday.
The announcement follows a May disclosure from Bidenโs office that the 82-year-old had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. The diagnosis came after Biden experienced urinary symptoms and a prostate nodule was detected.
โPresident Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,โ the spokesperson said, adding that the treatment is part of a comprehensive plan to manage the disease.
In a personal message shared earlier this year, Biden reflected on the impact of cancer, referencing the loss of his son Beau Biden to the illness in 2015. โCancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places,โ he wrote on social media.
Bidenโs health has drawn increased public attention, particularly following the release of a book detailing his physical and cognitive decline during his 2024 presidential campaign. After a widely criticized debate performance against then-candidate Donald Trump, Biden withdrew from the race in July 2024 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost the election to Trump.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and particularly prevalent in older populations. Research indicates that approximately 80% of men over the age of 80 have some cancerous cells in their prostate gland. While early-stage prostate cancer is highly treatable, it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men.
Hormone therapy, often used in conjunction with radiation, can help shrink tumors and slow disease progression, though it is not considered curative.
