The Nigerian Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning over allegations related to terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and other serious offenses.
The invitation was issued in a letter dated August 19, 2024, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team. The police warned that a warrant of arrest would be issued if Ajaero fails to comply.
According to the letter, Ajaero is required to appear for questioning on August 20, 2024, at the Old Abattoir, Guzape Junction in Abuja. The investigation reportedly involves charges of criminal conspiracy, subversion, and other offenses. The police have made it clear that failure to attend will result in immediate legal action, including the issuance of an arrest warrant.
In response, the NLC’s Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Benson Upah, linked the police invitation to the recent raid on the NLC’s headquarters in Abuja. Upah highlighted that prior to the raid, the NLC had urged the government to engage in dialogue with protest organizers while distancing itself from the protests. He also noted that the NLC had condemned the police’s excessive force during the protests and demanded an apology.
Upah further criticized the police’s reasoning for the raid, describing their justification as “laughable” and lacking in substance. The police had claimed the operation was aimed at locating incriminating documents tied to an international subversive element allegedly housed in the NLC building. The NLC has since challenged the police to provide evidence linking them to any such criminal activities.
This police action has sparked widespread concern, with many questioning whether there are attempts to suppress labor leadership in Nigeria. The raid and subsequent investigation are seen by some as part of a broader strategy to weaken the labor movement amidst growing dissatisfaction with economic conditions and government policies.
