Oprah Winfrey Encourages U.S. Voters: ‘Let Us Choose Joy!

Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, delivering a powerful message in support of Kamala Harris’s presidential bid.

Addressing thousands of attendees at the United Center, Winfrey urged independent voters to choose “joy” by backing Harris as the next President of the United States. She emphasized the importance of values and character, appealing to those undecided in the election.

Winfrey’s speech came a day after former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the convention. Building on their momentum, Winfrey called on Americans to reject divisive rhetoric and instead choose “common sense over nonsense.”

Recalling her own experiences with racism, sexism, and inequality, Winfrey expressed empathy for the struggles faced by many Americans and took a swipe at comments made by Republican vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance, who had disparaged Democrats as “childless cat ladies.” Winfrey humorously rebutted by saying that in moments of crisis, people don’t judge others by their personal circumstances but focus on helping those in need.

Winfrey concluded by celebrating Harris’s historic candidacy, noting that her journey from being the daughter of immigrant parents to potentially becoming the 47th President embodies the promise of America.

Her speech set the stage for Harris’s official acceptance of the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday, supported by an energizing lineup that included musicians Stevie Wonder and John Legend.
