The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has achieved a significant victory in the recent Local Government (LG) election in Adamawa State, securing all 21 council seats.

The State Independent Electoral Commission reported that the PDP also won all the councillorship seats in the state’s 226 wards, with the exception of Demsa Ward in the Demsa Local Government Area, where the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) claimed one councillorship seat.

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Mohammed Umar, announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Yola, stating that the ruling party won overwhelmingly across all 21 local government councils. Out of the 19 registered political parties in the state, 12 participated in the election.

This local government election in Adamawa was notable as it was the first following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant financial autonomy to the third tier of government.

The Court mandated that the Federal Government directly pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the 774 LGs in Nigeria to their exclusive accounts, preventing governors from controlling these funds. Additionally, the Supreme Court’s ruling barred governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
