North Korea Issues Warning of ‘Devastating Consequences’ Over Leaflets from South

Anti-North Korean Leaflets Created by Seoul-Based Activist Group

North Korean state media KCNA reported on Tuesday that Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued a stern warning to South Korea, asserting that there will be “devastating consequences” for dropping anti-Pyongyang leaflets over North Korea.

The leaflets were reportedly carried by 29 large balloons from South Korea, leading to tensions and inconvenience for North Korean residents.

The situation escalated following a recent exchange where North Korea retaliated by sending thousands of balloons filled with trash towards South Korea, in protest against campaigns by North Korean defectors and activists in the South. These campaigns have included sending aid parcels and critical leaflets across the heavily fortified border.

Kim Yo Jong condemned what she referred to as “petty and dirty” behavior by individuals she called “human scum,” hinting at potential different responses from Pyongyang if such actions persist. She emphasized the seriousness of the situation and warned of dire consequences without specifying further details.

The exchange underscores ongoing tensions between the two Koreas, highlighting the sensitivity of cross-border activities and their potential to escalate diplomatic and security challenges in the region.
