The Federal Ministry of Education has postponed the inauguration and retreat for pro-chancellors, chairmen, and members of governing councils of federal tertiary institutions.
This decision follows a directive from the federal government, prompted by a State House Press Release issued on May 23, 2024, calling for a comprehensive review of the nominees’ membership.
Originally scheduled for Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, the inauguration and retreat have been delayed. The ministry expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by this postponement.
The recent release of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and council members by the Federal Ministry of Education received public attention, particularly regarding concerns about the nominations not reflecting the federal character of the country. Some states received only one nomination, while others received multiple, prompting feedback across the country.
In response to public reactions, President Tinubu directed a complete review of the list of members, acknowledging the need for adherence to the principle of federal character as enshrined in the constitution. This review aims to ensure national spread and adequate representation of every part of the country.
In a separate development, the Bauchi zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) criticized the appointment of the nominees. They suggested that it would have been preferable for the Bola Tinubu-led administration to reinstate the previously dissolved members instead.
