The Ogun State Police Command arrested a 28-year-old man for armed robbery and murder of a 25-year-old man, police public relations officer Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a statement on Tuesday.

The suspect was reportedly arrested following an emergency call to police officers at the Agbado Division Headquarters that armed robbers were operating in the Fadahunsi Ijoko area of Agbado Local Government Area of Ifo (LGA) of Ogun State.

“After the emergency call, Division Police Officer, Agbado Division, Awoniyi Adekunle quickly led his men to the spot where it was found that while the armed robbers fled after robbing a Bashirat Anibire, a POS operator , of his bag containing cash amounting to N400,000 and his Itel phone, the robbers shot and killed a 25-year-old Qudus Popoola and also wounded a Faleye Oluwaseun,” the statement read.

Oyeyemi said the robbers were “fiercely pursued” and, with the help of local youths, one of them was arrested, while others fled.

The PPRO added that the injured victim was rushed to hospital for medical treatment, while the deceased’s corpse was released to the family upon request that they bury it according to their religious beliefs. “The preliminary investigation revealed that the three robbers arrived on a motorcycle with no lights at around 7pm and assaulted Bashirat Anibire who was closing his POS shop.

“The victim managed to escape from the robbers, but while she was running away with her seven-year-old son, the robbers caught her son and the woman ran back to save her son. During the trial, the robbers managed to snatch her purse and phone.

“The woman’s call for help attracted young people in the area who started chasing the robbers, while an emergency call was also launched to the police. It was in their attempt to flee the crime scene that the deceased and another were killed by the robbers,” she said. Oyeyemi noted that Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet investigation.

In the KP’s condolence message to the family of the deceased, he assured that the management will do everything possible to arrest the fleeing gang members.
