Director of Meteorology Department Buran: “I think it will be a fruitful year for producers and a difficult year for local governments”

According to meteorological forecasts, this winter will be rainy and harsh.

From December to April, precipitation is expected to be around seasonal normals. The seasonal normal per square meter of December is 86 kilograms, while that of January is 75; Around 58 kilograms in February and 35 kilograms in March.

According to Turish Agency Cyprus, Raif İlker Buran, Director of Meteorology Department, evaluated the seasonal forecasts for autumn and winter and said, “I think it will be a fruitful year for producers and a troublesome year for local governments.”

According to the TRNC’s 30-year precipitation average, the seasonal normal for October is 23.1 kg per square meter, and 48.2 kg for November. He noted that the forecasts for these two months are related to the fact that the precipitation will be around or below normal.

Buran stated that the autumn will be semi-arid.

Noting that precipitation is expected around the seasonal normals from December to April, Buran noted that the seasonal normals for December are 85.9 kilograms per square meter, 74.9 kilograms for January, 58 kilograms for February, 35 kilograms for March and 22.6 kilograms for April, and commented, “These are good amounts.”

Noting that the rain has turned into a problem in the country due to the lack of infrastructure, Director of Meteorology Department Raif İlker Buran said, “This winter is not extraordinary, we expect precipitation around seasonal normals, but even when 25 kilograms of rain per square meter falls in places with poor infrastructure, the roads are closed.

For this reason, I think it will be a fruitful year for producers and a difficult year for local governments.”

Pointing to the evaluations of the World Meteorological Organization, Buran stated that the active state of La Nina in the Central Pacific, which causes rainy and harsh winters, will continue until February, and that winter will be rainy and harsh, especially in Europe and the Mediterranean basin, where Cyprus is located.

Buran, Director of Meteorology Department, also stated that last year, unstable precipitation, unexpected cold in March and northerly winds that lowered humidity affected production.
