Kyrenia Municipality Mukhtars Increases to 13

According to the statement made by the Municipality of Kyrenia, the region was divided into three as ” Upper Girne Old Turkish Neighborhood Headman”, “Upper Girne Değirmentaşı (Milopetres) Neighborhood Headman” and “Yukarı Girne Çiftlikler Mahallesi Muhtarlığı” by the decision of the Council of Ministers .

With the newly created mukhtars, the number of mukhtars belonging to Girne Municipality increased from 11 to 13.

Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü said that they started to discuss the issue with the Girne District Governorate in February 2020, after the Upper Girne District Headman’s Office had difficulty in service due to the increasing number of buildings and population in the region in recent years.

Güngördü stated that a consensus was reached with the District Governor since the Upper Girne District should be divided into several regions before the pandemic, and that new neighborhood maps were created as a result of the detailed work of the municipality’s technical staff.

Güngördü stated that after the council decision taken in the Municipality, it was published in the Official Gazette on 5 August and entered into force with the decision of the Council of Ministers on 3 August through the Ministry of Interior.

Güngördü said, “In Yukarı Girne Neighborhood, which has grown and developed rapidly after 1974, the number of mukhtars has been increased and it has been aimed that the citizens receive better service. This is an important indicator of how much the population on the Girne Municipality border has increased.”
