Public Holiday: INEC Adjusts Commencement Date For Physical Registration Of Voters

The Federal Government’s declaration of Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st July 2021 as public holidays has compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adjust the commencement date for physical registration of voters and scheduled appointments by online registrants.

This was contained in a statement issued at the end of the Commission’s meeting held on 15th July 2021 and signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Barrister Festus Okoye.
The statement recalled that the Commission had, at its meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on 13th July 2021, noted that the date earlier fixed for the commencement of physical registration of voters and scheduled appointments by online registrants might be affected by the impending public holidays. Accordingly, the Commission promised to meet on 15th July 2021 to review the situation, which it has now done.
The statement partly reads:  the physical registration of voters will now commence on Monday 26th July 2021. Online registrants that have scheduled appointments from 19th to 23rd July 2021 will have their appointments rescheduled.”
Okoye added: “It is important to emphasise that the Continuous Voter Registration will take place over a period of one year. The Commission assures all Nigerians that no citizen eligible to register as a voter will be left behind.”
