Court remands cleric over alleged rape in Warri

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Warri, Delta state has remanded a cleric, Bishop Elijah Orhonigbe, at the Nigeria Correctional Service, Warri, for allegedly raping a 19-year-old girl (name withheld).

Orhonigbe is the Founder/General Overseer of Victory Revival Fasting and Ministry, Warri.

The victim is said to be a daughter of one his church members.

Magistrate Ejiro Diejomaoh ordered the remand of the accused pending legal counsel from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The Magistrate noted that in the advent that there was no space at the custodial centre, the defendant should be remanded at the ‘A’ Divisional Police Station, Warri.

Diejomaoh consequently adjourned the case to July 24 for mention.

The Police prosecutor, SP Vincent Orawemen, had told the court that the defendant allegedly raped the 19-year old on May 20.

Orawemen stated that the defendant carried out the unlawful act inside his church.
