Court dissolves OPC chairman’s 13-year-old marriage over adultery

The 13-year-old-marriage of the branch Chairman of the Odua People’s Congress, Jimoh Falana, and his second wife, Funke, has been dissolved by an Agege Customary Court in Lagos over alleged adultery.

Jimoh had approached the court to dissolve his marriage to Funke, whom he also accused of being quarrelsome and troublesome.

He told the court that there was no more love in the union as the wife was uncaring and adulterous; adding that Funke often fought his other wives, especially the fourth, and abuse his children.

The OPC leader also alleged that his wife slept with one of his subordinates, who kept bragging about the act.

He said, “This caused me so much embarrassment among my members, being an OPC leader in my area, and I called Funke’s attention to this and told her to come and swear to an oath, but she refused.

“She is very troublesome and aggressive. On a particular occasion, my wife threw a cup at me, tore my clothes in front of my colleagues and stabbed me in the stomach with a pair of scissors, because I opened a shop for my fourth wife. I am tired of the marriage; I want the court to separate us so that I can live a peaceful life.”

Jimoh claimed that he had not slept with Funke for more than two years since she moved out of his house.

Responding, Funke, a mother of three, denied the allegations and objected to the dissolution of the marriage.

She noted that her husband was lying, adding that Jimoh was giving her N1,000 monthly to cater for herself and her children.

Funke appealed to the court not to dissolve the marriage

The President of the court, Patricia Adeyanju, held that the crisis in the marriage could endanger the lives of the couple if proactive steps were not taken and thereafter dissolved the marriage.

Adeyanju said, “In the interest of peaceful living, the union between Jimoh and Funke Falana has ceased to be. The custody of the three children produced by the union should be as it is presently.

“I urged the estranged couple to be law-abiding and they are warned not to blackmail or threaten each other in any form.”
