Woman jailed 14 years for stealing baby

An Upper Area Court 2, Kabong, in Jos, Plateau State, at the weekend sentenced a 32-year-old woman, Christiana Anap, to 14 years in prison for stealing a four-month old baby.

The judge, Nanlang Dashe, who passed the sentence without an option of fine, said it would deter others.

Prosecutor Abdullahi Inuwa had told the court that the accused was arrested by officers of State Security Service (SSS) in Awka, Anambra State on November 26.

He said the accused stole the baby from his mother at Terminus area of Jos North Local Government Area and took him to Anambra.

On arraignment, the accused pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.

Inuwa said the offence contravened Section 209 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
