The body of a man who was in a car that was swept away by a torrent in the Kyrenia area in the northern part of Cyprus was found early on Thursday in a ravine in Kyklos, on the Nicosia to Kyrenia road, reports said.

The body was found by firefighters and efforts were underway to pull the car out of a ravine.

Authorities in the north believe three other persons were in the same car and a search was launched in the area to find them.

Rescue crews had tried to pull the car from the ravine at 1am but failed due to heavy rain.

The rain caused floods in Kyrenia and other areas.

Haber Kibris reported that the biggest damage was caused in Kyrenia, Karavas, and Lapithos.

Trees were uprooted and roads sunk while damage was caused to buildings.

Because of the bad weather, a number of schools in the north remained closed on Thursday.
