A man damaged his own house and suffered burns to his body after looking for a gas leak with a lit match, according to police in Michigan.

Port Huron police said that the man was rushed to a hospital after suffering first-degree burns to his face and arms.

Port Huron Battalion Chief Mark Ford said that the incident unfolded on Saturday, at around 11:00 a.m.

The man, who was not identified, lives at a home located in the 2400 block of Military Street.

He recently installed a gas heater in his home.

When he got up on Saturday morning, the man smelled natural gas.

The man lit a match and walked around his house to locate the source of the natural gas leak.

The plan backfired as the gas ignited.

His house caught on fire and the explosion caused him to suffer burns to his face.

It took firefighters more than an hour to extinguish the fire as the flames got inside the wall.

The house suffered extensive damage.
