Nintendo Switch launch on par with its predecessors

Nintendo’s new video game console, the Switch, is off to a decent start.

Between its release on March 3 and the end of the first quarter, Nintendo sold 2.74 million units of its new flagship device, a number that is on par with early sales of its predecessors. Accounting for the difference in availability across Nintendo’s largest markets, the Wii did slightly better than the Switch while the Wii U did slightly worse.

Interestingly, the numbers reported by Nintendo reflect what may have been the largest problem with the launch of the Switch: a lack of software. Despite similar hardware sales, Nintendo sold significantly fewer games for the Switch, which is all but certainly due to the lack of appealing launch titles next to Zelda.

Nintendo is already working on filling that void though, with some highly-anticipated titles due to be released shortly.
