Woman who poured leftover coffee down drain gets fine for discharging pollutants in the sewer system

An elderly woman in the United Kingdom, was shocked to receive a fine for pouring her leftover coffee into a sewer.

65-year-old Sue Peckitt of London, said that an officer who saw her getting rid of leftover coffee sued her the $100 fine for polluting the sewer system.

She appealed the fine, but it was upheld in court. After going public with her story, the council refunded her payment and canceled the fine.

Peckitt said that she bought a cup of coffee while shopping, and since it did not taste very good, she decided to throw it away.

She walked over to the nearest sewer drain and poured out the contents of the cup. She then threw the empty paper cup into a nearby garbage bin.

An officer who observed Peckitt, approached her and issued a fine for polluting the sewer system.

The woman was surprised to get the fine as the environmental law was introduced deter companies from dumping poisonous, noxious or polluting matter into the drainage system, and not for coffee.

The council apologized to the woman, and canceled the fine after it was upheld on appeal.
