Venus Williams found her footing and her form at the U.S. Open Thursday.
After struggling through a three-set match in the opening round, Williams, who had not played in three weeks prior to that contest, cruised into the third round with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Germany’s Julia Goerges.
“Today was a lot more measured,” Williams said. “I just felt like I had to dial it back a bit.”
Williams limited her mistakes, committing 17 unforced errors after playing what she considered to be overaggressive tennis in the opening win.
Now in her 18th U.S. Open, Williams, 36, noted that she has no plans of exiting the stage anytime soon.
“You want to be out there and play the game you want to play,” she said. “If you get to the point where you cant do that, that’s where you need to start to think, ‘Okay, I need to move on.’ I’m not at that point yet, and hopefully I’ll be able to play the game I want to play right until the last day that I’m done.”
