A family in Ireland, is devastated after the mother of a 1-day old baby was killed in an accident while talking on the phone to a hospital.
26-year-old Nicola Kenny of Thurles, was killed after a truck rammed into her car while she was traveling to a hospital in Dublin, where her 1-day-old child was hospitalized.
According to the police investigation, Kenny gave birth to her daughter Lily-Rose on Sunday, at the Clonmel hospital. Doctors became concerned on Sunday evening after Lily-Rose developed a fever.
The doctors decided to transfer Lily-Rose to the Temple Street hospital in Dublin. Kenny traveled with her mother Ann and aunt Irene, to be close to Lily-Rose.
While traveling on the M8 motorway, Kenny got a phone call from Temple Street hospital, saying that the baby will be transferred back to Clonmel hospital as her condition improved.
Around 12:25 p.m., while Kenny’s car was parked on the shoulder of the M8 motorway, a truck slammed into the vehicle.
Kenny, who was in the back seat, died at the scene. Kenny’s mother Ann, suffered a broken arm and a shoulder injury.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released. Kenny’s aunt Irene, was taken to the University Hospital Limerick, where she is said to be in critical condition.
