Dismissed policemen held for alleged impersonation

Two dismissed policemen have been arrested by operatives attached to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone II for alegedly using police accoutrements to extort people.

The suspects, Joseph Okoya, 45, and Bitrus Yohonna , 35, were arrested by the Zonal X-Squad for driving a commercial bus while clad in police uniforms and alleged extortion.

Okoya, who was dismissed in 2010, was arrested around Abule-Ado Bus Stop on the Badagry Expressway in a bus marked XC755LSR and Yohonna was arrested around the Trade Fair Complex. He wore the Police Mobile Force’ (PMF) attire.

Yohonna, who was dismissed from the police last year for alleged gross misdemeanour was caught performing police duties at the complex.

Police identity cards, piles of petition and statement forms, letter headed papers and some other incriminating documents were found in their custody.

Zonal spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said: “The suspects, who have confessed to using police uniform to perpetrate many illegal acts, will be charged to Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for Impersonation and unlawful possession of Police accoutrements.”
