Woman accidentally shot herself while recording Snapchat video

Police launched an investigation after a young woman shot herself while recording a Snapchat video with her cellphone, according to police in Florida.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said that 22-year-old Regina Powell, shot herself and her phone with a gun while recording a video in the garage of her home.

According to the police investigation, Powell was playing with a .40 caliber gun that belonged to her uncle when she pulled the trigger and shot her cellphone, which she held in her right hand, on Sunday evening.

Powell suffered lacerations to her thumb and forefinger, which was caused by the phone screen shattering from the bullet.

Powell’s aunt heard the shooting, but did not witness it. Her uncle was not home at the time of the incident. The aunt took her niece to the Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, where she was treated and released.

The aunt told police that on the way to the hospital, she threw the gun out of her car window. Police were unable to locate the gun.

So far, no charges have been filed as police believe the shooting was an accident.
