Newborn baby dies in hospital after being given laughing gas instead of oxygen

A baby has died and several others were injured after a hospital gave them laughing gas instead of oxygen, police in Australia said.

Bankstown police said that they have launched an investigation to determine how the gas lines at the Bankstown Lidcombe Hospital, were carrying the wrong type of gas.

A doctor at the hospital discovered the problem after the baby of Sonya Ghanem, died unexpectedly. Health Minister Jillian Skinner said that she ordered an investigation and all hospitals were inspected.

Skinner promised that the government will help all the families affected by the grave and sad error. Ghanem said that she felt her heart stop when she picked up her newborn son and he wasn’t moving.

She shook her son John Ghanem, and kept shouting for him to wake up, but he didn’t. Skinner said that all hospital lines were tested and they were found to be carrying oxygen and not nitrous oxide.

So far, it seems that what happened at the Bankstown Lidcombe Hospital, was an isolated incident. People across the country have called on Skinner to resign as health minister.

Another baby is still in critical condition with significant brain damage after inhaling laughing gas at the maternity ward of the hospital.

What will you do as a parent of this babies?
