The mid-year conference/merit award of the Isoko Development Union (IDU) at Oleh,Delta State, was almost called off yesterday after a midnight explosion blew up part of the building.
According to The Nation, an explosive device planted by unknown persons went off at the secretariat of the union in Oleh, headquarters of Isoko South Local Government area early yesterday just hours before the award ceremony, however,the award ceremony proceeded as planned.
The leadership of IDU described the attack as a deadly blow.
President-General of the IDU, Chief Iduh Amaideh, speaking to Saturday Nation in Warri last night, said the incident occurred between 4:00 and 4:30am on Friday morning.
He said:”It happened in the night, around 4 or 4;30am, nobody was harmed.
“The police are still investigating. We too are putting our heads together to look at where such a thing could have come from, but it’s a sad development, considering all the efforts we have made, the resources we have put to get structure there.
”The damage is much, it’s not what we can manage, we’ll have to pull the whole thing down to restructure it. Almost 80% of it is destroyed. It was a huge damage.
”The Isoko nation is having an ongoing event; the recognition of Isoko sons and daughters, who have excelled and contributed to the development the nation in so many ways. We honoured them, 17 of them; 15 men and 2 women.”
