Man drowns after saving wife from rip current

A husband and wife of Florida, went from Fort Myers to Miami Beach, to spend the day at the beach.

However, their romantic getaway turned into a tragedy when a rip current claimed the life of the husband.

Kendra Smith said that she and her husband, 34-year-old Sherrod Whittington, were having a good time in the water before a rip current threatened to drown her.

Her husband grabbed hold of her and they were clinging to each other. At one point, Smith said that her husband was pulled away, but they managed to get a hold of each other.

They both screamed for help. Whittington told rescue workers to save his wife first.

His wife was taken to shore. Sadly, by the time rescue workers reached Whittington, the rip current has claimed his life and they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith was devastated over the loss of her husband who gave his life to save hers. “I appreciate that, I really do, and I’m going to honor him until the day I die because of that. He’ll always be my hero,” she said.

Smith said that while they were going through the terrible tragedy, a thief stole their belongings, including their credit cards.
